World War 1 in Africa – Breaking the Myths
Breaking the Myths is a Diversity House Heritage Lottery Funded project covering various aspects of World War 1 in Africa.
One of the themes the project team identified as important is the relationship between the metropole and the governed territories, in today’s language ‘diplomatic relations’. However, we are looking at more than the relationship between the rulers and administrators: included are personal relations, how the Imperial related to th individual and how the individual related to the imperial in the local capital and in Europe.
You are invited to contribute a piece reflecting on the relationship between Britain and another territory involved in the war in Africa. In particular, we are keen to explore how the relationships evolved or differed between micro-nations (tribes), social class, religious groups, urban and rural areas. Another important part is how relations between European powers impacted on relations in the respective territories in Africa.
Contributions should be between 3,000 and 6,000 words excluding references. They can focus on one group, a combination or provide a comparison. Please send your contribution to Anne Samson at GWAfrica@outlook.com by 15 June 2018, for the online debate to start in July 2018. Your contribution should be accompanied by a short biography of no more than 150 words.
The publication, to be jointly published by Diversity House and the Great War in Africa Association, is expected to be available in October 2018.
It is also hoped that contributors will be prepared to participate in an online dialogue based on their contribution in an attempt to encourage others to engage with the subject. If you are prepared to contribute to this online discussion for a short period of time, please indicate this when submitting your contribution by including the email address you would like registered and a user name. We will notify you when the system is ready. It is envisaged that key points from your contribution will be posted to start the debate.

World War 1 in Africa – Commemorative Book
As part of its Breaking the Myths project, Diversity House is compiling a commemorative book on the First World War in Africa.
One of the aspects Diversity House is looking to capture includes thoughts and views of the legacy of the war on the African continent.
Because of your research and interest in aspects of the Great War in Africa, you are invited to contribute up to 1,000 words on why the contribution of Africa in the world wide struggle should be remembered. If appropriate, you may include some of the challenges faced with remembrance or areas which still need to be further researched.
It is envisaged that these contributions will provide a valuable contribution to the memory and historiography of the war in Africa and suggest areas of future study.
Please send your contribution to Anne Samson at GWAfrica@outlook.com by 31 July 2018. Your contribution should be accompanied by a short biography of no more than 150 words.
